2 Marines, 5 Abu Sayyaf killed in Sulu clash

By Roel Pareño (philstar.com) | Updated August 10, 2017 - 2:30pm ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A clash between Abu Sayyaf bandits and troops on patrol in Kalingalan Caluang town, Sulu on Thursday afternoon left two Marines and five bandits dead.

 

Another Marine was wounded in the operation to rescue the bandit group's hostages, the military said.
 
Brig. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Joint Task Force Sulu, said the Marines were conducting a security and rescue operation when they encountered 30 heavily-armed bandits about at Sitio Langhub, Barangay Pang at 4 a.m.
 
Marines recovered two M16 rifles, an M14, a Garand, a KG9 submachine gun, a .50-cal assault rifle and a shotgun but found no sign of four Filipino laborers that the Abu Sayyaf had threatened to behead.
 
“JTF Sulu forces is determined to continue their relentless and sustained effort in pursuing the Abu Sayyaf groups and other lawless elements for the safe rescue of the kidnap victims,” Sobejana said.
 
The Abu Sayyaf group threatened to behead their captives Joel Adanza, Jason Baylosis, Edmundo Ramos, and Jun Guerrero, who were seized along with two other companions who managed to escape when they were forcibly taken from Kaumpang Elementary School at Barangay Bangkal, Patikul town in July.
 
Anaza's wife told authorities the Abu Sayyaf group had called her to demand P3 million in ransom. She had until Thursday afternoon to pay up.
 
She said the Abu Sayyaf group instructed the hostages' familiesto seek help from Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar to produce the ransom.
 
“Edmondo Ramos, who was allowed to speak, begged to us to look for help because they were given until 3 p.m. today,” said Myla, Jason Baylosis' wife.
