Fire hits Metro Gaisano mall in Cebu

Cebu City (CNN Philippines, January 6) — A fire hit Metro Gaisano at the Ayala Center Cebu Friday night.

According to the Metro Gaisano management, the blaze started around 9:30 p.m. at the 3rd floor toy stockroom, which caused the 4th floor to collapse.

At around 10 p.m., thick black smoke was seen coming out from the third floor of the six-story building, prompting firefighters to create holes on the walls for the smoke to come out.

While there were no visible flames coming out of the building, the smoke covered the roads around the Ayala Center Cebu and other buildings two blocks away.

The fire reached Task Force Alpha level, which means all fire stations were called on to respond. Firefighters said the blaze was still ongoing as of 4 a.m.

The management said all customers and personnel have been safely evacuated.

Mall staff were gathered at the open parking area of the mall and other portions of the Cebu Business Park.

Most of them were unable to get their belongings from the locker room as they were asked to immediately evacuate.

Customers and late-night moviegoers were also asked to leave right away.

Cebu City disaster management chief Nagiel Banacia said the sprinkler system of Metro Gaisano department store did not work when the fire broke.
