Odette strengthens into tropical storm ahead of landfall

MANILA, Philippines – Tropical Depression Odette intensified into a tropical storm late Thursday evening, October 12, shortly before its expected landfall in the province of Cagayan. It has been given the international name Khanun.

 

In a bulletin issued 11 pm on Thursday, state weather bureau PAGASA said Odette will hit Santa Ana, Cagayan between 11 pm on Thursday and 2 am on Friday, October 13.

As of 10 pm, it was located 125 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan, still moving west at a fast 30 kilometers per hour (km/h).

Odette now has maximum winds of 65 km/h and gustiness of up to 80 km/h. (READ: FAST FACTS: Tropical cyclones, rainfall advisories)

Signal number 2 is now raised in the following areas:

  • Batanes
  • Cagayan including Babuyan Group of Islands
  • Apayao
  • Ilocos Norte

Signal number 1 is up over:

  • Isabela
  • Abra
  • Kalinga
  • Mountain Province
  • Ifugao
  • Ilocos Sur

 

 

 

 

Areas under tropical cyclone warning signals should watch out for possible floods and landslides.

Sea travel also remains risky in the seaboards of Northern Luzon.

Odette is expected to exit landmass on Friday morning, then leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in the evening.
