Ed Laguerta, Phivolcs resident volcanologist here, said the phreatic (steam-driven) explosion was classified as “low intensity” and should not alarm residents.

Mayon Volcano’s seismic monitoring network did not detect any volcanic earthquake during the past 24 hours. Moderate emission of white steam plumes that crept downslope towards north-northeast was observed. The crater could not be observed last night due to thick clouds covering the summit. Precise leveling surveys on April 30 to May 4, 2015 indicated slight deflation of the edifice relative to the March 2015 surveys, although the edifice remains inflated relative to baseline levels.
