Duterte's Independence Day message: Love for nation and courage gave Filipinos freedom

ABS-CBN News | MANILA – Love for our nation and courage gave us our freedom, President Duterte said in his message to the Filipino people for Independence Day.

He added that the Philippines’ journey towards freedom had never been easy.

“Dugo, pawis at buhay ang inialay ng ating mga ninuno noon para sa mga karapatang tinatamasa natin sa kasalukuyan bilang mga malayang mamamayan,” he said.

The President said Filipinos should value the sacrifices of our heroes by being good citizens.

Malacañang on Friday cancelled the traditional vin d’honneur that commemorates Independence Day in lieu of the President focusing on efforts to resolve the crisis in Marawi City.

The military earlier said it hopes to liberate Marawi from the Maute group on Independence Day.

However, Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief Eduardo Año on Sunday said they may need “a few more days” to clear Marawi City of Maute presence.
