PAO eyes criminal raps over Dengvaxia mess

ABS-CBN News Posted at Apr 04 2018 09:34 AM The Public Attorney's Office (PAO) on Wednesday said it will file 4 criminal complaints against individuals believed to be responsible for deaths being linked to the controversial anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia.

Government defense lawyers will lodge the charges Thursday on behalf of families whose children died after receiving Dengvaxia under the government's scrapped dengue immunization program, said PAO chief Atty. Persida Rueda-Acosta.

"Magfa-file na po ng 4 na criminal cases ang 4 na pamilya dahil tapos na po ang histopathological exam ng mga tissues na isinagawa po ng ating mga pathologist," she told DZMM.

(The 4 families will be filing 4 criminal cases because our pathologists have finished the histopathological exam of the tissues of the children.)

More than 830,000 Filipino schoolchildren were injected with Sanofi's Dengvaxia vaccine in the world's first public dengue immunization program.

But the country stopped the sale and distribution of Dengvaxia last month after French drug maker Sanofi warned the vaccine could worsen symptoms for people who had not previously been infected with the virus.

PAO in February filed a civil case against Sanofi, former Health Secretary Janette Garin, former Undersecretary Kenneth Uy, and other officials.
