Mt. Mayon stays restive, spews lava twice early Thursday – Phivolcs

By: Faye Orellana - @inquirerdotnet / 07:57 AM January 25, 2018 Mayon volcano let out a 300-meter high lava early Thursday morning, the Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology (Phivolcs) said.

Mayon volcano spews red-hot lava in another eruption as seen from Legazpi City, Albay province, roughly 200 miles (340 kilometers) southeast of Manila, Philippines on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. Mayon has spewed fountains of red-hot lava and massive ash plumes anew in a dazzling but increasingly dangerous eruption that has sent 56,000 villagers fleeing to evacuation centers. The lava fountaining event at 6:11 a.m. generated ash plume of 2.5 kilometers (km) traveling southwest from the Mt. Mayon’s crater.

During the episode, residents of Ligñon Hill reported hearing loud rumbling sound. Ligñon Hill is 11 kms southeast of the restless volcano.

Phivolcs likewise said that Mayon spewed a 400-meter lava at 2:02 a.m. also on Thursday.

Phivolcs was not able to measure the height of lava fountaining due to thick clouds, but said that the episode lasted for 58 minutes.

On Wednesday, Phivolcs recorded a total of six events of lava fountaining at Mayon.
