Mother Foundress

Our story begins with a woman who loved and risked much.

Her name was Marie Louise De Meester

At the turn of the century, with little security for the future, she sailed from her native Flanders in Belgium to Mulagumoodu in India to care for orphans and abandoned children.  She inspired young women in that country and in Belgium to join her in her life of dedication.

From the beginning, the congregation Marie Louise founded was marked by the sending of missionaries.  With the few sisters she had from Belgium, she began new foundations in the Philippines, in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, and in the United States.  Before she died in 1928, the congregation had expanded to the Belgian Congo and to China.  It was the poor the sisters felt called to serve, and therefore, these were hard years for them.  But there was no turning back.

Thus the ICM congregation was born.

Today the ICM sisters are in 18 countries organized into 11 ICM Districts, made up of 13 different nationalities.
